Smile Opel Ascona 400R 6-cylinder

Hello everyone!

I am modelling my own car. It's a 4-door Opel Ascona B, that is painted in the colours of the Opel Ascona 400, which is the racing model of Opel, back in 79. I am modelling it in its 2-door version tho, which is the original, but you can't call it again 100% original, it's a replica. The reason is that I am going to model the engine I have already purchased. It's a c30se engine (straight-six 3.0 24v, 204 PS originally, 270 Nm).

It's a SPLINES model in MAX, even tho people in here have expressed their dislike on splines (sorry, that's how I 've learned to model so far, but I am always open minded to better solutions and trying to learn anyway). As you will be able to see, I am coming across some difficulties, since splines are not very easy to work with. I cannot make perfect lines like some of you guys can, totally straight n stuff... But I hope to be able to make myself better by the flight of time...

Enough with the words, here are the images...

Your opinions and constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for looking!

Looks good so far mesh in areas are a not smoothe enough. Do some screen shots with edges faces on (F4). Spline modeling is hard i have tried it. Keep it up.

Here is the real car:

Here is my model so far... @draco: I have rendered a bit, having turbosmoothed some parts, while also having realigned some vertices in order for the parts to fit with each other as much as possible. What I mean by that? Check the part where the door closes. It fits with the rest of the body. Obvisouly tho, I still have to work on it a lot on quite a few places, but it's progressing...

and the wireframe:

aaand... oops! just noticed a few mistakes on the front spoiler... anyway... you get the picture

Just a few small updates...

Render from Brazil r/s:

FULL VIEW PLEASE!

the seats and the wheels are off my old porsche carrera gt project. I intend to make a GOOD interior and much better wheels! I want to believe I have progressed a bit since my last project and I am going to attempt a lot more realism here... Wish me luck!

Suggestions are always welcome

Thanks for checking out!

wow, thanks! It's the best comment I ever got in a cg forum! Means I have progressed a bit then and my job is at least a bit better than "Crap" ! Thank you very much indeed!

There is still a huge lot of details to be added. I think I will go for the engine, exhaust, injection system, diff, gearbox, everything! Plus the interior...

I haven't set a poly limit on this project. My aim is to make it as real looking as possible. There's still a LOT of work ahead of me tho

This is highly skilled spline modeling!
But may i humbly suggest you convert it to poly, surface thrreshold set to 1 or 0 (don't remember) and model on.
I spent a lot of time trying to make out decent splined models. Bumps insisted in abounding, no matter how clean the splinecage. Maybe it was me, or MAX simply does not handle inorganic spline models as good as organics spline models.
Convert it to poly and enjoy the far more suitable capabilities of this method.

I think the engine is way too big and the body is denty, looks like it was badly repired after a crash... other than that i like the model, especially the suspension

Yes, you definitely need to work on the angles of this car, they are really all over the place, which I think is where the denty comment came from above. So really study real pictures of this car, (angle shots are the best) and compare them to the real car, because right now the proportions in what I know of just average cars doesnt seem to fit.
