hmm well Fcefinish has always been an easy way to do normals, I alway used zmodeler though.

very carefully, and i still havent got the normals anywhere close to right...

I think i want to learn 3dsmax and remake it in there.

If i import it into there half of it is like flatshaded and im not sure why.

3d studio's been my one and only, I've never tried anything else. I've imported z3d models before (the rims and the intercooler) and they seemed fine, try importing the model and applying a smooth modifier on it. Not meshsmooth, just smooth and check autosmooth.
