Corvette Stingray C3

Hey guys,

This is pretty much my first ever car model that I have made, as the only other time I have attempted was within the first few weeks of ever touching a 3d package (3dsmax) and that was basically a learning curve of getting the hang of the program so was not really concentrated on the car model at all. So now I am revisiting and going ahead with a model after getting a bit more experience but mainly been doing characters and animating since then (~9months)

So i have decided to go and make one of my fave cars, a C3 corvette Stingray So far i have only really got the base shape of the car down, and sorting loops so comments on that would be appreciated before moving on.

If you don't know what the car is, here is the main ref that I'm using among a whole load of other images:
1971 Corvette Stingray front
1971 Corvette Stingray back

As this is a learning project please leave as much comments on Crit, Suggestions, Technique, Love, Hate, whatever as thats the only way to get better

So here is where I am up to so far, those bits are not detached yet, that's just colour so I can distinguish easily:

Been doing a tiny bit each day as been working for the summer, but got some time today to do a good amount of the front section and just work detailing the shapes:

Hi and welcome to the board, nice car you've chosen to model

What I noticed at first is that front lights are not placed right, they should be more closer to the edge of the bumper. Edges on bonnet could be sharper they look too round now.

Your poly topology looks very nice though, you've managed to keep everything in quads what I can see

The model is a bit rough in places but for a first car model its very clean and and shows a lot of promise. The areas i notice that are rough are around the hood, side, and lower front bumper. just areas that are not as smooth as others in shape.

Thanks guys, Tried to work on some of those points mentioned today.

I brought the lights down, and smoothed sections out mainly the lower bumper and the sides, but Johanas, where you say hood do you mean the orange section or the fins that are round the front edges of the bonnet? I did tidy up and sharpen the orange bits and make the V shape on the front better but I do need to work on the far fins too.

I made a start on the back section of the roof and barely on the top of the roof itself, I just wanted to post some screenshots as I'm finding it tricky to get right as the plans are not really helping so I'm mainly going by eye, does it look right? I know its pretty lumpy but I want going to wast time on that if it looks wrong...

Cheers

First screen are changes to the front, and the roof are the following:

This looks great you got any base frame wire shots ( ie no smoothing) Be great to see your structure at this point.

If you need more reference pics, eBay motor is always good place to look at

eBay Motors

As Cah said above if you want us to help spot errors on mesh, unsmoothed wireshots would be nice to see. Sofar looks good already some pinches, for example on that air vent in fender.

Cheers for the comments. Thanks for that too Johnas, Ebay would have been the last place i would have thought to look but it seems great as there's loads of angles by people to try and sell

There is a motor show on in town this week so ill be going down there hoping that ill get lucky with a C3 corvette showing up. I really doubt it being a small town in England where I live though, most of the time its triumphs, Bentleys, Jaguars and the like. Should still get decent reference for the future hopefully

I wont bother posting much up as I haven't done any big progress, but ill put some wire renders of what's done so far, for you to see as requested. (noticed smoothing groups at the front, ill fix them)

Not to shabby. There is one edge that stuck out to me, along the bottom behind the front fender, but other than that nothing too crazy to cause a problem

About pictures : even if there is no Vettes, take as many pictures as you can and please share them in the photography section , always fun to see car show pictures

Small update:

worked a bit more on the back tidying it up, adding the cap, and then a small bit on the rear spoiler but halfway through i decided to work on the doors a bit more

So i then made the handles, key slot and wing mirrors:

More work on the rear today:

Done:

Flag emblems
Rear lights
Rear exhaust
Plate slot
Rear bumpers
Extended the front out a bit more after matching a side reference it was a little short
General tweaking

So some renders and wires below for that, but also im kind of confused on the text emblem, im guessing use the text editor, what font is it?

Not sure what font it is but you can always trace it with splines. Lots of work but will pay in the end I'm sure

Very nice progress so far also, looking better and better.

Only note would be that dent on middle of the bonnet

Cheers, That bit on the bonnet isn't a dent, its just where it goes into a V and is obviosly sloped down at the same time. Combined with a rough camera angle it just looks that way

Yep looks like i have to go down the spline route, i have been searching for a good hour or so and cant get anything

Ah well that explains

Splines are tricky in Max, needs lot of tweaking. Try polymodeling if splines wont work

UPDATE:

Worked a bit more on the roof today, I got in with the top removable bit of the roof fine and it does have a solid underneath too, just not detailed at all. I'm still undecided on whether I want to go ahead with an interior yet, I may just do some basic seats and a steering wheel and have slightly darker windows .

Anyway here's some shots of what I got up to, Roof, bit of the interior roof, and then the Emblems that i did the other day, i think they came out pretty well

For the rear 'corvette' one i used Mangal font and just stretched it and moved it about until it looked right, but for the 'stingray' and '454' emblems i just used a standard font with a load of tweaking on it in spline stage, the stingray one was obviously the most work...

Im going to try and get the model stage fully complete by this weekend so ill push it this week to get it done soon

So here's the shots of the roof, Tsplit, and the emblems:

Heres more updateness:

Worked on bulking out the interior, nothing major, just filling it in and getting a basic shape going. I have also done the same to the insides of the doors and wheel arches.

Also added windows and a rear view mirror.

Oh and i bevelled the emblems too
