1989 BMW E30 316i

Hi all.
I've been browsing these forums for a few weeks now but haven't actually contributed anything but have learnt a lot. I'm rather nervous of posting any WIP's here as everyone's models seem to put mine in shame.

I've made a few half-hearted attempts at making cars but my knowledge of Max is somewhat limited at the moment and I'm still finding the interface a little unnatural (that's what 4 years of using UnrealEd does to you!) although things are getting a little easier.

General consensus is that the best way to start vehicle modelling is to do your own car. However, E30 blueprints of a decent quality seem to be hard to find. So I popped out and took some pics of my car today to help me with references.

I'm not going for picture perfect. In fact I'd like to get this car into UT2k4 in the future which is something I know I can do. As long as the general gist of the thing is there (and people recognise it!) I'll be quite happy.

I don't think so
Most people may have more skill, and are furhter in the progress of creating their cars.
Maybe you are quite new, so don't have much skills, and you've probably just started this.
I think it looks very promising, so don't be ashamed
Keep it up!

Thanks for the encouragement.

I've been working on the front and it's taking ages to do. I'm so slow!

Red over red wasn't the best choice, but ohwell... I think that's a bit weird

Noo, not that.. The red circle on the fender

EDIT:
Though I must say the red doesn't look too attractive

it does look very good for a starter, my only complaint is you might want to extend teh top of the grill out a bit further so it doesint look so straight up and down

I've fixed that bumpy bit on the bonnet and angled the grill a bit.
I've not put the grill bars in as yet, I'm not sure if I will as I would like to keep the poly count low for UT2k4 but we'll see. I've started work on the back too.

I'll need to go back to the front to put the indicators and fog lamp textures in (I left my car at the pub so haven't been able to take photos of those parts yet )

Will post some more shots tonight after I've done a little more work.

I've started work on the back. It's a bit of a mess at the moment and the light textures are temporary (it was getting dark outside). A lot more work is needed for the pillars and roof.

It's been a little while but a lot has been done.
I've gotten the poly count down to under 5000 so it'll work in UT ok.
Here's some screenshot from ingame.
They're not driveable yet and I need to set up the shaders properly so they'll look shinier

When driveable, the cars can be destroyed but there's no deformable damage as such.
