ugh... well, ok, seems I didn't get back into the swing of things until now. Considerably later than I had planned. Soo, yeah the image in the upper left is a photo-composite I did really quickly, and the bottom right is fully 3d.

I guess it's now on to ... ummm... Union Pacific...

ok, this union pacific skin shown here took about 2 hours or so to paint, since I already had the base that I used for the Burlington Northern locomotive

I'd like to do a CSX locomotive, as someone had requested that before... and also a Santa Fe, however I don't believe I've got time to be spending on them, since this is already enough. I probably could've done with just Union Pacific, but I wanted to show off by using a single texture for both trains... you know... saving resources and all that good stuff

so yeah, the low down on the train... situation is that I'm going to have many many cars use the same image map, such as the case with this locomotive, which is a 512x512 map. I was able to fit 2 designs on this one, but for the freight cars, especially box cars, might be harder for the tankers and cars that use inside details, gondolas, for example, but for things like boxcars especially I plan on getting about 3 to 4 cars in one texture.

The chassis of all train cars will be using the same image as well, so you could potentially load up a train with 3 engines, 30 boxcars, 20 tankers, 40 gondolas, 15 car carriers, and 20 flatbeds with various accessories on them, and I might be dealing with as few as 8 textures for that entire train... heheh

anyway, image now

it's been a while since I've posted anything, I guess...

so here are some updates... ... well, one image update, two text updates...

first off, the text updates.

I have decided to post my work in progress shots at my own website, and then post some images every once in a while, when I get some significant progress going, or am starting something unusual... so this way I won't clutter the WIP board up with too much stuff, so I don't run out of image posting limits or whatever. Anyway, the site hasn't been uploaded yet, and I'm still working on the finer details of it. I'll tell you some time when it's uploaded, probably have it in my sig or something too.

Okay, one more text update:... I've been doing quite a few "entertainment" related models in the past, since I've just recently developed pretty interesting "ball UVW mapping" techniques... so I've been working on stuff like basketballs, pool balls, probably going to do a tennis ball, and I've gotta do some basket ball hoops, pool tables and perepernalia, as well as tennis rackets/nets, so I can have the people in my project doing sports at various moments...

I've got some more of the story thought out, however I still don't have enough thought out to post here, as it's so filled with holes...

but I have figured out that I want to have some 'familiar' stuff in them, so I'm doing a television house as the apartment I live in, in the movie... So here it is. Haven't textured one thing in this yet, and I still have to model quite a bit of stuff, including the refridgerator, dishwasher, oven, microwave... pretty much everything the kitchen/laundry room would have, up to and including the kitchen sink, which just happens to actually need modeling, so pardon the pun

so here's the first image... if anyone can guess what show this kitchen is from, I will sorta be surprised

been a while since my last update... I'm not sure what happened to all the time, but I seem to have been sucked up into a mist of ... well, emptiness. Um... before I loose my mind again, here's some more pictures...

so none of the 70 people who've viewed the apartment have a clue what TV show it's based very closely off of? O_O

... anyway, these pictures are just a few quick pictures, the first two show images of some of my old demo reel buildings updated to more video game-appropriate textures, and in my opinion, a lot more realistic textures than I was using on my demo reel. I wasn't very impressed with my reel, so the section of road in Motor City that looks like my demo reel section should be like an "In your face, you inferior product!" sorta thing heheh

and the last picture shown is my new lighting system, used on an old scene... heh. nothing I can really do about the sharpness of the shadows unfortunately... With the version of 3dsmax I'm on, I've only got raytraced shadows, which show the trees' shadows nicely, but are too sharp, or else I could use shadow mapped shadows, which show boxes as the tree shadows, but are softer, which unfortunately is an even softness, which is also more unrealistic than these raytraced shadows... so, the disadvantages of the softer shadows outweight the disadvantage of raytraced shadows... so yeah...

eek... it's been so long!

... well, to explain the huge time gap here, I've been doing work now... pretty fun, get to have my fair share of 3d work, and learn a bunch of new and interesting stuff... so it's pretty exciting for me.. funny thing though how I can do 8 hours of 3d stuff at work then come home and want to work on my personal project after that's all said and done...

so yeah, still gonna be cranking out progress, just not as quickly as before...

anyway, I've got a TTX TTGX Autorack freight car modeled.

If you're interested, I've made prints from this model and they're in the blueprints donation section now...

so yeah, here's the picture of my fiddling with the trains and nature again

hmmm... well, okay... got some boxcars done as this clever little animation shows:

I've uploaded those new boxcar blueprints to the donation board as well, in case there's any train lovers here

...

also, as some of you might have noticed, I'm prepared to make some huge blueprint donations to the site, but I need the resources to create the blueprints... so I've made this thread asking for help gathering those resources from y'all... once you get the appropriate pictures, I can make blueprints for everyone based off of your car.. and also I should be using those prints to make new and unique hot wheels/matchboxes from. Visit this thread I created in the requests forum, which hasn't gotten much attention at all yet, to check out what I need http://www.smcars.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13446

hopefully I can get some pictures I can make blueprints from, from you all...

I'm about to post on some forum that my schoolmates use to ask if anyone's willing to meet with me so I can photograph their vehicle heh

but yeah, anyway, I've decided to include vehicles that weren't exactly hot wheels or matchboxes, or majorettes, or off brand toy cars... so yeah, that way it'll look more like a city, and less like an 'exotic car show gone awry'
