Toy car movie project

Heh... well, the only other WIP I posted here was two cars with relatively high detail.

I've abandoned those for a more functional project, and one that I've been *really* wanting to do instead of this running around modeling stuff that already exists.

I want to use my creativity to come up with my own entire world of a city type thing of the proportions of GTA SA type size.

A huge undertaking yes. However I'm more than willing to dedicate a good number of years to the finishing of this project. Anyway, the kicker? The cars are all going to be Hot Wheels.

I'm probably going to have to clean out my hard drive into a bunch of CD's before this can be completely done, but my goal is to model every hot wheel I've got in 3d, and put them in a city, then model a whole lotta people, either people I know, or just faked people, or both, then I'm making an animation out of that.

a huge project, and probably one that'll drive me insane - but as long as I'm having more amounts of fun than the amounts of insanity I'm getting, I'm happy.

So to start off, for whoever cares, here's the first car of my project, incidentally with some of the first few textures for my project.

Everything is low poly, and the only things it's using that aren't readily available in many games right now are raytraced reflections and shadows... though with games like gran turismo, and driv3r, those features, or similar features, or features that have the same results are showing up, so I figure why not use them on this project as well.

Anyway, every texture here has been manipulated - there are no plain photos here. Obvious tiling should be minimal, and the largest textures of course are going to be the grass textures. For a further note, the vehicle textures are hand painted in photoshop. No photos whatsoever.

anyway, I hope this is interesting for you all - I don't want to bore you with all my progress shots lol

Wow hock:
Hehe it's a really interesting idea, and very creative, and from the looks of the pic you'll be executing it very nicely I like the die-cast motif, instead of just trying to model a 'real city' like so many think about.

Nice work, look forward to more

Spare change?

Brings back memories.
Me and my best friend had ~1000 little toy cars... Matchbox and Majorette.

...And nice job you've done!

Cool! Hotwheels, eh? Mind if you put in some Ferraris into the animation?

well, I've got at least 3 different ferraris going into the project at the moment ... might be more if they're selling any newer kinds at the store...

there's around 250 or so hot wheels that I've got going into this project

So cool! I'm almost 20 but I still have all my die-cast models! I love the scratches! They look so real! Could you make the wheels rounded please!

what are you talking about?... like, add more segments? or make the wheels look puffier?

this is supposed to be an add-on piece for my portfolio, which consists of low poly game modeling and texturing, my "goal" for the cars is under 4000 faces, so there's not much more I can do for adding segments to the wheel, as that would instantly put me at around 6000 faces heh... there's a lot of detail in these tires as it is...

... that having been said, is this WIP section (as well as Renders section) for JUST cars or can it be any 3d work?

I might have some buildings and other shots that would be interesting, but if the art galleries are soley for car shots, then I might just have my site show the building shots and stuff

Wow, I could help you out, I have buttloads of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars from when I was a little kid. Seems like a really fun project, best of luck

I've a Ferrari 308, 348, 355 (cabrio and Challenge), 360, 456 GT, 512M, 550 Maranello, F40, F50 and Enzo. I think all I need right now is the 365GTB (I think it's what it's called), Ferrari P4 and the Ferrari 355 to complete a collection of Ferraris.

well, if you've got a hot wheel (or paint job of a hot wheel that I'm modeling) you want to see in 3d, scan it in, making sure to get the vehicle as close to 90° to the scanner as you can get it. the best way to do this is to use a little clamp, and get clay blocks to hold the car up. squeeze the clamp together and the car should stay up on its own... especially helpful for the cars that have mirrors, or making top views of the car...

you could probably just use photobucket and point me to the url of the image or something

however, my car models are higher priority right now, so unless you have a model that I'm already working on, or will be working on, which in that case, it's just the paint job, I probably won't be able to get to any cars soon...

the ferrari's I've got so far are:

308
308 GTB
Testarrosa
F40

-edit-

I'd need a top, side, front, back, and bottom view, and if the interior is shown, I'd also need photos of the interior.

please don't have any pictures over 512 pixels in either dimension, as that is already more than large enough for this project
