My first 3d project

ok im new to 3d and i could use some help you all seems really great i hope your canhelp me im using 3dmax6 in pic 1 u can see that the front bumper doesnt have mesh smooth on it. i want thatlittle cutout to light not to looseits edgewhen i mesh smooth the object pic 2 is it with mesh smooth on i dont know how to keep it from turnging into a circle any help would be greatthisis my first 3d model its a rx7 2nd gen any help will be helpful (:

Go into edge selection mode, and highlight all the edges of your rectangular shape (like in the attached pic, but of course you'll have to select the ones hidden in that pic too). then apply a Champher to it (if thats how you spell it) with a small value, so that you see a very thin row of polies appear on all those edges. having that will cause the mesh-smooth to keep that light area rectangular.

In max 6 I've found you don't need to use chamfering.
Select your edges and then set the crease to 1.0
