ok, heres an update(/frustration)
lots o images:

low:

high:

normals:

the result so far:

ok, now my problem is the pixelatedness (is that a word?). im using max7 with the built in normal maping on a 2048x2048 map. i tried 4096x4096 but it gave me an "error creating bitmap" error after it rendered. ive got LOTS of space free both on the system drive and the destination drive. im not running out of memory either. ive tried tga, tif, bmp, and even jpg. no luck . anyone know how to get rid of this error? oh, and i know about the red errors on the normal map, but i dont want to spend lots of time fixing up the cage if its going to have this quality level in the end. once i get the quality i want then ill do the cage.

What do you mean? You can't figure out how they look like in real life, or how you should/could build them, or...?

Looks nice btw
