Cool Post-Apocalyptic Gas Station

Whilst Project Pearl is on hold for a lil' bit, I've started a brand new project almost totally un-related to cars!!...

...well, as un-related to cars as I possibly get

...a Gas Station!!

A lil' bit about the project firstly... To hopefully become a set-piece for the Fairlane model I've done, I'm contructing a post-apocalyptic Gas Station to sorta match the design choices I've chosen for my car. It'll be a very Route 66'-esque Gas Station, and almost to the point of being a Station from the 50s. Of course, it'll be very run down (as you can see by the attached), and I plan on putting my own lil' touches to it mainly within the texturing

This project is serving two purposes for me right now; 1.) To add something architectural/environmental to my Portfolio that is more video-game related, and 2.) To teach myself useage of DirectX Shaders in MAX... that's right, all renders put up'll be coming to you screen-captured directly running real-time from MAX's Viewport!!

Anyways, started late this afternoon and this is what I've got so far; a fully modelled and textured ground area and half of the Gas Station itself (what you can see is already UVW-Mapped so far too). Currently at ~2500-triangles.

oooooo environmental work XD XD

what are the black splotches on the model? is that some sort of display issue? or are there two meshes in there? Perhaps related to the wear-down somehow?

Display issue mate, flickering Normals Working in building measurements, so millimeters, and that's roughly a 30m x 30m block of land.

Love those angled pillers with the holes. Very 50's - 60's.

Also someones been doing bangers out the front on the road. Nice.

Hehe, Im doing qite the same right now, Ill open a thread. The probem with realtime shaders I have is: 1.) The screen resolution isnt as high as a render and 2.) I get some weird bugs sometimes, with alphamaps for example.

But cool to see more environment work here, cant wait to see more

I hope to see some normals-, diffuse- and specularmaps to crit the unwrap

Nice work Doc. Maybe I should do something environmental.
I know this bug pretty well the problem is that the model is too much zoomed-out, to get rid of it, just make your model smaller (just use scale tool). I know, you want to keep right sizes but that's only one way I know.

Thanks guys Yeah, know all about the Viewport Clipping, ect... Gonna have to just live with it for now.

Textures'll be posted up once I've textured the Station itself. crazy989, that texture still needs a bit of work so she's not quite there yet. A few other spots tile too much too that I need to fix up.

Anyways, day 2 on this baby, and the Gas Station itself is now modelled and un-wrapped... Onwards to texturing!!

Well after a brilliant night out on the town last night at a Glam-Rock Night in the City and getting home at 4am this morning and sleeping through the majority of today, I'm back in action with this project for tonight!!

Now there's a few litte updates here, the first and foremost being the almost-complete texturing of the Gas Station's Overhang. Just a few lil' things to fix on that which I'm not quite happy with before moving on. Also, the keen eye may've noticed that I now have AO in the scene Never done that before using Max's Texture Baking Utility, so that was cool. I've also re-adjusted/added some geometry to the Station itself.

Ahh, what a way to spend a Sunday

Got up quite early this morning considering I went to bed at 3am after more refining of this project... Small update this time around, with the texturing of the Overhang's Support Struts as well as the Planet Killer Fuels Globe, which spins around slowly on the spot.

...now, onwards to texturing the Diner!!

Well after a couple of hours and a butt-load of listening to 80s Hair-Metal, the Diner is pretty much textured... Got a few lil' details I'd like to add, but I thought I'd post up anyways.

Had a bit of an annoyance tonight after PhotoShop corrupted my .psd file I was using for this... Wasn't even saving when my PC blue-screened, but that was enough to do it. Luckily I still had the latest .jpg I'd saved for the previous update, so I'm using that as my new .psd's Base Layer.

Anyway, the night is still young-ish, so I'm a gonna get back into it!!

I'm so sorry because of your .psd file I know that feel.

About ur textures. Only one thing I don't like is that you a bit overkilled this bumpmap. Places where you rip of some paint seams too deep if compare to your model scale. But that might be only my feelings.
Anyway nice work so far.

The same happend to my church.psd, was looking for a font in the list and that stupid photoshop crashed so I had to use the bitmap file (the.psd was too old lol).

Good luck, cant wait to see it finished. Are you going to import it into some game?
